64-slice CT Scanner
The Siemens SOMATOM Sensation 64-slice CT scanner is setting a new benchmark for excellence in medical imaging. By using the most advanced X-ray tube in the industry, it captures more data and creates more detailed images. Better images can help doctors see the finest details of the human body at new levels of speed and performance. Sinai Hospital is proud to announce the arrival of this new, noninvasive method for evaluating coronary artery disease.

Labeled the single most important diagnostic breakthrough in the last 20 years, this new technology will enable doctors to identify people who are unaware that they are at risk for heart disease, thus revolutionizing the diagnosis and treatment of a disease that attacks more than 800,000 Americans each year (according to the American Heart Association). It’s important to note that the 64-slice CT scanner is not likely to replace the gold standard, cardiac catheterization. It is simply another tool doctors can use to diagnose disease. And it’s less invasive, which is attractive to most patients.

RP-7 Robot
The RP-7 robot, developed by InTouch Health, permits doctors to virtually consult with patients, family members and hospital staff at a moment’s notice. The 5-foot, 5-inch robot looks similar to Rosie the Robot from the “Jetsons,” with a flat-screen computer monitor face. To give the robot a more personal look when it makes rounds, the doctor’s face is displayed live on the screen. The physician guides the robot with a joystick from a computerized ControlStation? from a designated remote location often located in a home or office. With on-board two-way cameras, microphones and wireless technology, the physician is also able to review charts, current lab work and X-ray results without physically being in the hospital. Sinai launched the mobile robot initiative with one robot in the Department of Bariatric Surgery as a safety measure and closer way to monitor patients following weight-loss surgery. Additional robots may be added in other departments in the future.

CyberKnife®
Sinai Hospital, through the Alvin & Lois Lapidus Cancer Institute and the Department of Radiation Oncology, has established a stereotactic radiosurgery center, using the Accuray CyberKnife®. Mark Brenner, M.D., chief of Radiation Oncology, and Neal Naff, M.D., chief of Neurosurgery , are directing the center.
Patient treatment began in April 2003. The facility and staff continue to provide this exciting new therapy option to our patients.

Vocera
Vocera, a hands-free, wireless communications system, has revolutionized the way caregivers at LifeBridge do their jobs.

With Vocera, nurses don't have to stand by a desk waiting for an attending physician to return a page. The voice-activated badges enable users to instantly reach a charge nurse or find out the result of a lab test even if they don’t know the extension or name of the person they are calling. With a little help from the computerized Genie, Vocera gives users the freedom to communicate more efficiently.

The super lightweight, black badges can be used to communicate with other badge wearers, departments, desk phones, pagers and outside lines. Vocera is utilized by care providers throughout Northwest and Sinai hospitals with close to 2,000 badges deployed and over 800 clients connected concurrently during peak hours.

Vocera users can also send and retrieve voice messages and record reminder notes. Some clients can send broadcast messages to entire units with one touch of the call button. Incoming calls can be blocked using the Do Not Disturb function during meetings and trips to the bathroom (good Vocera etiquette). But in the event of an emergency, the badge wearer can still be reached if the caller sends an “urgent” message that breaks through all call blocking modes.

Electronic Patient Lifts
Electronic patient lifts are available in some units at Sinai Hospital. The lifts go from the patient bed to the bathroom, and can accommodate up to 600 pounds. The lifts can go from floor to ceiling and help assist a patient who needs to be lifted from the floor. Nurses use the lifts to help weaker patients out of bed and to a chair, or into the bathroom.

Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE)
Sinai implemented CPOE in 2006. CPOE allows physicians, residents, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurses and respiratory therapists to enter electronic orders for their patients. Evidence-based order sets assist with ensuring the most up-to-date care is provided to our patients. New Orders go to Nurse Review to notify the nursing staff. Nursing uses the Patient Activity List to review tasks, plan and document care of patients.

Electronic Medication Administration Record (EMAR)
Medication orders automatically populate the EMAR. The pharmacy reviews the medication orders and the patient’s medication history. Nursing documents administration electronically. All providers can review the patient’s home and hospital medication information online.

To support CPOE, documentation of clinical data was implemented to include:
• ED triage, discharge instructions and prescriptions
• Admission history
• Medication and allergy information
• Height/Weight
• Vital signs
• Pain assessment
• I/Os

Currently, design and development continues to facilitate electronic documentation of the complete patient record.

eShift
Sinai Hospital and Northwest Hospital Center offer RNs the opportunity to view open shifts in other units throughout the hospital and apply for the shift.  The request is then sent to the unit manager who has the ability to approve or deny the request. The RN is sent an email indicating that status of their request. RNs have the ability to view open shifts from any internet connection whether they are at home or at work. RNs can only view the shifts in units where they are qualified to work.  Coming soon, eShift will be available for Patient Care Associates and Administrative Associates.
